Did you know that bikes and walkers/joggers should slow to a stop and let a horse know you would like to pass by and do so when safe?

As park users flock to the trails to enjoy the sunshine in the nature, our horses and humans are always happy to stop and say hello to you when yielding to them on the trails.

Liz Eaton comes to BHA! JUNE 21-22

Internationally renowned equestrian coach Liz Eaton comes to Burnaby, clinic information available on our website!

Liz Eaton is one of the most empathetic and horse-first coaches and her lessons can be described as “a counselling session with your horse”. Her flatwork, poles and course jumping are really just about horsemanship rather than a specific discipline. She focuses on meeting you where you and your horse are at, and is incredibly knowledgeable about the biomechanics of your horse and helping your horse find their balance. Liz has been seen working with a greenbroke western horse who wouldn’t trot over a single pole, and also school a big warmblood jumper over a 3ft course, so she really does meet everyone where they are at, and it’s a very supportive environment.

@em.thri and Sage, ever consider careers in equestrian modelling? We think you two would be GREAT at it.

BHA is located right in the City of Burnaby, a quick turn off Gaglardi Highway 1 exit and you’re there!

This makes it not only convenient for all of our members to get to and from the barn to care for their horses, it also makes us a great location to visit and experience horses in the city.

We at BHA count ourselves very lucky to be able to share the Burnaby Lake network of trails with our entire community - whether it be other riders, cyclists, pedestrians and wildlife (scroll to the second image to see Storm saying hello 🐎🐢 to a painted turtle).

We will continue to support accessibility for all to enjoy this area and welcome open dialogue with all users!

Did you know that anything that flattens a horse’s hair, such as mud or excessive oiliness, can make them feel extra chilly in the cold weather?

Horses create an insulating layer by trapping air next to their bodies through piloerection (similar to human goose bumps!) By making their hair stand up, they increase the hair depth creating more space for the air to pocket.

When a horse’s coat gets wet or matted down (like in the second photo), the hair is unable to stand up and create this insulating layer.

MAINTENANCE ALERT

Maintenance and repair work on the barn doors and indoor arena doors will begin Monday November 25 and is projected to last until Thursday the 28th. Expect to have some disruptions to your regular routine while this is happening.

Monday will begin with Barn 2 front entrance. You will be able to use the back entrance while the front is being worked on. From 12-2:30 the indoor arena doors will have maintenance done.

Tuesday will be Barn 2 back entrance, you will have to use the front entrance while this is happening. This will require power being suspended for a couple of hours while they repair this back door. The main breaker to the facility will be shut down so your timers will need to be reset at some point that day once the power is restored. They will do their best to keep it as small a window as they can. Start making plans to have members feedwhen normally your drop would do it.

Will update you as details become available to me with regards to Barn 1 and 3.

STORM WARNING

Please be prepared for the predicted storm that is coming tomorrow evening into Wednesday morning. In anticipation of power outages and fallen trees make sure you ……
-have working flashlights
-hang extra hay
-have a fully charged phone

If a tree comes down and has caused significant damage or hinders the movement of vehicles and people around the immediate footprint, please call the Burnaby Treeline at 604-294-7200, if it is after hours call the Engineering department at 604-294-7460. You will need to give them the address and a contact phone number.

Burnaby Lake and it's surrounding coniferous forest is not only where BHA members play, but also where the bobcats play!

BHA has had kittens playing around holding pens and tightrope walking the fence line. Bobcats will hunt squirrels, rats, mice, voles, beavers and nesting birds, but they prefer rabbit.

While incredibly cute and despite their small size, the bobcat is a ferocious hunter that can take down animals much larger than itself, such as deer and antelope.

Please admire these beautiful animals from afar and respect their space.

We are so lucky to have been riding on the Avalon Trail for over 53 years!

We encounter people of all ages - sometimes ones who have never met a horse - cyclists, dog walkers and the occasional bear.

Thank you @metrovancouverbc @cityofburnaby for regularly maintaining these multi-use trails!

Fall at BHA is especially magical, crunching through the leaves and the cool crisp air. @susanandrews138 and Dakota are enjoying every minute!

SAY NEIGH.

This Friday Sept 27th from 6-8pm, stand with Jann Arden and put an end to live export of horses from Canada to foreign countries to be slaughtered for human consumption

Canadian Juno Award winning singer Jann Arden will be performing, speaking and taking photos with fans in support of the ongoing campaign to ban live horse export. There has been some success in Parliament with Bill C-355 passing by a vote of 181-137. It now must get Senate approval to be finalized and the result remains uncertain.

What do horses see?

Based on current research, horses are thought to have restricted color vision. They are particularly sensitive to brightness, with white appearing very bright. Horses can readily differentiate between yellow and blue, though some studies suggest that blue may appear blurry to them. To horses, orange appears similar to yellow. Colors like red, which are significant to humans, blend into brown and fade into the background, as does green.

What is the difference between horses with a natural gait and "naturally gaited horses?"

Did you know that there are some horse breeds that are genetically predisposed to having SMOOTH gaits such as flat walk, pace, saddle rack and other ambling gait variations?

While all horses have natural gaits, there is a special class of horses that are considered naturally gaited. Can you name some of these breeds?

(hint: the horses in the image above are on the list!)

Did you know BHA hosts weekly horse play on Thursday nights in the indoor arena? Horse play includes many new stimuli and toys for you and your horse to explore.

Horse play nights are great for practicing desensitization. Systematic desensitization means to progressively expose a horse to a stimulus they may normally spook at, in small but increasing amounts that don’t trigger the fear. Done correctly, this results in the horse not being frightened when faced with maximum exposure to the stimulus.

Did you know? When horses feel relaxed, they might go for a roll; a behaviour that seems infectious much like a yawn!

You will see horses rolling one after the other on the same spot. Rolling helps the horses to shed their coat, scratch an itch and regulate their body temperature. Rolling in mud can also condition their skin and can be a useful insect repellent as well!

The Standardbred is an American breed developed for the sport of harness racing. But just like their Thoroughbred ancestors, these horses can go on to successful second careers as riding horses after they leave the racetrack. In fact, BHA is home to at least two retired standardbred racehorses, Thieving Magpie and Millibanks Sniper!

Standardbreds are classified as trotters or pacers depending on the gait they use for races. Bred initially from horses that could trot one mile in a standard time, the American Standardbred is now the fastest trotting breed in the world.
